The Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, Most. Rev. Dr. Peter Odetoyinbo has charged members of St. Jude Thaddeus society in the diocese to be wise Catholics. Bishop Odetoyinbo who gave this charge in his homily at the Induction ceremony for new members of the society held at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Mowe said Catholics must always see themselves as created by God with wisdom. He asked, “Are you a wise or foolish Catholic?”
The Prelate drew his message from the Gospel reading of the day which presented the parable of the ten maidens while admonishing members of the St. Jude society to remain focused on Christ and prepare for his return. They must draw wisdom from Christ and be guided by it as they await his second coming. The Bishop pointed out clearly that the foolishness of the five foolish virgins was in their lack of wisdom to make provisions for extra oil that would have made their lamps to be sufficient as they waited upon Christ. He said, “The foolish virgins are like owners of jeep vehicles with no extra tyres.” Bishop Odetoyinbo therefore laid the charge before families not to be distracted by their desire to sustain themselves in this period of economic recession and thereby lose focus on preparing and sustaining themselves for heaven. While reminding the devotees of the life and example of St. Jude Thaddeus, the Bishop charged the new members that the signs or behavioural life of St. Jude must be seen in them everywhere they go and in everything they do. According to him, “Such signs and behavioural life must be for the purpose of seeking and following the path that Christ has chosen for us as Catholics, such signs must bring new souls and lost souls to Christ; they must be one of devotion in wisdom and in communion with Christ.
